Interview Question: Why This Role Now?
A two-part hiring-manager question framework that reveals role trigger, team trajectory, and strategic runway before you commit.
Two-Part Script
- “Why are you opening this position now? What’s the trigger you’re solving?”
- “How do you see this team evolving over the next 6 months?”
Answer-Use Framework (After They Respond)
- Classify the trigger: backfill, new budget, re-org, or expansion.
- Extract one growth signal for your follow-up email.
- If growth signal is weak, ask one clarifying scope question before close.
Real Follow-Up Angle from Source
“You mentioned expanding GTM coverage—here’s how I’d tackle that in the first quarter.”
When to Use This Template
- In hiring-manager or panel interviews where team plans are discussed
- When job description clarity is low or seems reactive
- Before final rounds to test role stability and growth runway
✨ Personalization Tips
- Adapt the “trigger” wording to the function (GTM, product, operations)
- Keep the six-month horizon to expose whether leadership has a real plan
- Reuse their language later in your thank-you note and follow-up
- Treat vague answers as data, not a debate prompt
